 Transliteration:
anabhyāse viṣaṃ śāstram।

 English translation:
Knowledge without practice is like poison.

 Hindi translation:
अभ्यास के बिना ज्ञान विष की तरह होता है।

 Transliteration:
nātyantaṃ saralairbhāvyaṃ gatvā paśya vanasthalīm ।
chidyante saralāstatra kubjāstiṣṭhanti pādapāḥ ॥
 English translation:
Do not be very upright in your dealings, as you would see in forest, the straight trees are cut down while the crooked ones are left standing.
 Hindi translation:
अपने व्यवहार में बहुत सीधे ना रहे, वन में जो सीधे पेड़ पहले काटे जाते हैं,
और जो पेड़ टेढ़े हैं वो खड़े हैं ।

 The ‘right’ method – Chanakya Neeti 4.18

कः कालः कानि मित्राणि को देशः कौ व्ययागमौ ।
कश्चाहं का च मे शक्तिरिति चिन्त्यं मुहुर्मुहुः ॥

Transliteration:
kaḥ kālaḥ kāni mitrāṇi ko deśaḥ kau vyayāgamau ।
kaścāhaṃ kā ca me śaktiriti cintyaṃ muhurmuhuḥ ॥

 English translation:
Consider again and again the following: the right time, the right friends, the right place,
the right means of income, the right ways of spending, and from whom you derive your power.

 Hindi translation:
इन बातो को बार बार गौर करे…सही समय, सही मित्र, सही ठिकाना,
पैसे कमाने के सही साधन, पैसे खर्चा करने के सही तरीके, आपके उर्जा स्रोत ।

यो ध्रुवाणि परित्यज्य अध्रुवं परिषेवते ।
ध्रुवाणि तस्य नश्यन्ति चाध्रुवं नष्टमेव हि ॥ ०१-१३

 Transliteration:
yo dhruvāṇi parityajya adhruvaṃ pariṣevate।
dhruvāṇi tasya naśyanti cādhruvaṃ naṣṭameva hi॥ 01-13
 English translation:
He who gives up what is imperishable for that which is perishable,
loses that which is imperishable; and doubtlessly loses that which is perishable also.
 Hindi translation:
जो निश्चित को छोड़कर अनिश्चित का सहारा लेता है,
उसका निश्चित भी नष्ट हो जाता है। अनिश्चित तो स्वयं नष्ट होता ही है।

 Importance of learning – Chanakya Neeti 2.13

श्लोकेन वा तदर्धेन तदर्धार्धाक्षरेण वा।
अबन्ध्यं दिवसं कुर्याद्दानाध्ययनकर्मभिः॥ ०२-१३

 Transliteration:
ślokena vā tadardhena tadardhārdhākṣareṇa vā।
abandhyaṃ divasaṃ kuryāddānādhyayanakarmabhiḥ॥ 02-13

English translation:
Let not a single day pass without your learning a verse, half a verse, or a fourth of it, or even one letter of it; nor without attending to charity, study and other pious activity.

 Hindi translation:
ऐसा एक भी दिन नहीं जाना चाहिए जब आपने एक श्लोक, आधा श्लोक, चौथाई श्लोक,
या श्लोक का केवल एक अक्षर नहीं सीखा, या आपने दान, अभ्यास या कोई पवित्र कार्य नहीं किया। 


True quality of a man – Chanakya Neeti 3.6

Chanakya Neeti 3.6

प्रलये भिन्नमर्यादा भवन्ति किल सागराः ।
सागरा भेदमिच्छन्ति प्रलयेऽपि न साधवः ॥ ०३-०६

 Transliteration:
pralaye bhinnamaryādā bhavanti kila sāgarāḥ।
sāgarā bhedamicchanti pralaye’pi na sādhavaḥ॥ 03-06

 English translation:
At the time of the Pralaya (universal destruction) the oceans are to exceed their limits and seek to change, but a saintly man never changes.

 Hindi translation:
जिस सागर को हम इतना गम्भीर समझते हैं, प्रलय आने पर वह भी अपनी मर्यादा भूल जाता है और किनारों को तोड़कर जल-थल एक कर देता है; परन्तु साधु अथवा श्रेठ व्यक्ति संकटों का पहाड़ टूटने पर भी श्रेठ मर्यादाओं का उल्लंघन नहीं करता।

The greatness of a human – Chanakya Neeti 16.06

Chanakya Neeti 16-06

गुणैरुत्तमतां याति नोच्चैरासनसंस्थितः।
प्रासादशिखरस्थोऽपि काकः किं गरुडायते॥ १६-०६

Transliteration:
guṇairuttamatāṃ yāti noccairāsanasaṃsthitaḥ।
prāsādaśikharastho’pi kākaḥ kiṃ garuḍāyate॥

 English translation:
Greatness comes from good qualities and not from a high position.
A crow doesn’t become a Garuda (the chief of the feathered race) just by sitting on the top of a palace.

 Hindi translation:
उत्तमता गुणों से आती है, न कि ऊँचे स्थान से।
कौआ महल के शिखर पर बैठकर गरुड नहीं बन जाता।

विद्याहीना न शोभन्ते निर्गन्धाः किंशुका यथा॥ ०३-०८

Transliteration:
rūpayauvanasampannā viśālakulasambhavāḥ।
vidyāhīnā na śobhante nirgandhāḥ kiṃśukā yathā॥ 03-08

English translation:
Though one be endowed with beauty and youth and born in noble families, yet without education they are like the Palasa flower which is void of sweet fragrance.

Hindi translation:
रूप और यौवन से सम्पन्न, उच्च कुल में उत्पन्न होकर भी विद्याहीन मनुष्य सुगन्धहीन फूल के समान होते हैं और शोभा नहीं देते।

प्रवासे मातृसदृशी विद्या गुप्तं धनं स्मृतम्॥ ०४-०५

Transliteration:
kāmadhenugunā vidyā hyakāle phaladāyinī।
pravāse mātṛsadṛśī vidyā guptaṃ dhanaṃ smṛtam॥

English Translation:
Learning is like a cow of desire. It, like her, yields in all seasons. Like a mother, it feeds you on your journey, therefore learning is a hidden treasure.

Hindi Translation:
विद्या अर्जन करना यह एक कामधेनु के समान है जो हर मौसम में अमृत प्रदान करती है। वह विदेश में माता के समान रक्षक अवं हितकारी होती है। इसीलिए विद्या को एक गुप्त धन कहा जाता है।

यथा चतुर्भिः कनकं परीक्ष्यते
निघर्षणच्छेदनतापताडनैः।
तथा चतुर्भिः पुरुषः परीक्ष्यते
त्यागेन शीलेन गुणेन कर्मणा॥ ०५-०२

 Transliteration:
yathā caturbhiḥ kanakaṃ parīkṣyate
nigharṣaṇacchedanatāpatāḍanaiḥ।
tathā caturbhiḥ puruṣaḥ parīkṣyate
tyāgena śīlena guṇena karmaṇā॥ 05-02

 English translation:
As gold is tested in four ways by rubbing, cutting, heating and beating – so a man should be tested by these four things: his renunciation, his conduct, his qualities, and his actions.

 Hindi translation:
जिस तरह सोने की परख घिसने से, तोडने से, गरम करने से और पिटने से होती है, वैसे हि मनष्य की परख विद्या, शील, गुण और कर्म से होती है।

दारिद्र्यनाशनं दानं शीलं दुर्गतिनाशनम्।
अज्ञाननाशिनी प्रज्ञा भावना भयनाशिनी॥ ०५-११

 Transliteration:
dāridryanāśanaṃ dānaṃ śīlaṃ durgatināśanam।
ajñānanāśinī prajñā bhāvanā bhayanāśinī॥ 05-11

 English translation:
Charity puts end to poverty; righteous conduct to misery; discretion to ignorance; and scrutiny to fear.

 Hindi translation:
दान दरिद्रता को नष्ट कर देता है। शील स्वभाव से दुःखों का नाश होता है। बुद्धि अज्ञान को नष्ट कर देती है तथा भावना से भय का नाश हो जाता है।


Chanakya Neeti 5.13

जन्ममृत्यू हि यात्येको भुनक्त्येकः शुभाशुभम्।
नरकेषु पतत्येक एको याति परां गतिम्॥ ०५-१३

 Transliteration:
janmamṛtyū hi yātyeko bhunaktyekaḥ śubhāśubham।
narakeṣu patatyekaeko yāti parāṃ gatim॥ 05-13

 English translation:
A man is born alone and dies alone; and he experiences the good and bad consequences of his karma alone; and he goes alone to hell or the Supreme abode.

 Hindi translation:
मनुष्य अकेला हि जन्म लेता है और अकेला हि मरता है। वह अकेला ही नर्क मे जाता है और अकेला ही परम पद को पाता है।


Chanakya Neeti 5.19

सत्येन धार्यते पृथ्वी सत्येन तपते रविः।
सत्येन वाति वायुश्च सर्वं सत्ये प्रतिष्ठितम्॥ ०५-१९

 Transliteration:
satyena dhāryate pṛthvī satyena tapate raviḥ।
satyena vāti vāyuśca sarvaṃ satye pratiṣṭhitam॥ 05-19

 English translation:
The earth is supported by the power of truth; it is the power of truth that makes the sun shine and the winds blow; indeed all things rest upon truth.

 Hindi translation:
सत्य ही पृथ्वी को धारण करता है। सत्य से ही सूर्य तपता है। सत्य से ही वायु बहती है। सब कुछ सत्य में ही प्रतिष्ठित है।


Chanakya Neeti 6.07

कालः पचति भूतानि कालः संहरते प्रजाः।
कालः सुप्तेषु जागर्ति कालो हि दुरतिक्रमः॥ ०६-०७

 Transliteration:
kālaḥ pacati bhūtāni kālaḥ saṃharate prajāḥ।
kālaḥ supteṣu jāgarti kālo hi duratikramaḥ॥ 06-07

 English translation:
Time perfects all living beings as well as kills them; it alone is awake when all others are asleep.
Time is insurmountable, rest upon truth.

 Hindi translation:
काल सभी जीवो को निपुणता प्रदान करता है। वही सभी जीवो का संहार भी करता है।
वह जागता रहता है जब सब सो जाते है। काल को कोई जीत नहीं सकता।

संतोषस्त्रिषु कर्तव्यः स्वदारे भोजने धने।
त्रिषु चैव न कर्तव्योऽध्ययने जपदानयोः॥ ०७-०४

 Transliteration:
saṃtoṣastriṣu kartavyaḥ svadāre bhojane dhane।
triṣu caiva na kartavyo’dhyayane japadānayoḥ॥ 07-04

 English Translation:
One should be satisfied with one’s wife (spouse), food, and money. One should never be satisfied with one’s study, chanting, and charity.

 Hindi Translation:
अपनी पत्नी (साथी), भोजन और धन से संतुष्ट होना चाहिये,
अपने अध्ययन, जप और दान से नहीं।

 दीपो भक्षयते ध्वान्तं कज्जलं च प्रसूयते।
यदन्नं भक्षयेन्नित्यं जायते तादृशी प्रजा॥ ८ – ०३

 Transliteration:
dīpo bhakṣayate dhvāntaṃ kajjalaṃ ca prasūyate।
yadannaṃ bhakṣayennityaṃ jāyate tādṛśī prajā॥
 English translation:
The lamp consumes darkness and produces dark soot.
Similarly, what food we eat affects what we produce (offspring).  
Hindi translation:
दीप अन्धकार को खा कर काला काजल बनाता है।
इसी प्रकार जैसा अन्न हम खाते हैं, वैसा ही हम उत्पन्न (संतान) करते हैं।

क्रोधो वैवस्वतो राजा तृष्णा वैतरणी नदी ।
विद्या कामदुधा धेनुः संतोषो नन्दनं वनम् ॥८-१४॥

 Transliteration:
krodho vaivasvato rājā tṛṣṇā vaitaraṇī nadī ।
vidyā kāmadudhā dhenuḥ saṃtoṣo nandanaṃ vanam ॥8-14॥

 English translation:
Anger is a personification of Yama (the demigod of death); Thirst is like the hellish river Vaitarani; Knowledge is like a Kamadhenu (the cow of plenty), and Contentment is like Nandanavana (the garden of Indra).

 Hindi translation:
क्रोध साक्षात् यम है। तृष्णा नरक की ओर​ ले जाने वाली वैतरणी है।
ज्ञान कामधेनु है और​ संतोष ही तो नंदनवन है।

 Transliteration:
gate śoko na kartavyo bhaviṣyaṃ naiva cintayet।
vartamānena kālena vartayanti vicakṣaṇāḥ॥

 English translation:
We should not (unduly) grieve for what is past, and not worry about what is yet to come; the wise live in the present.

 Hindi translation:
अतीत का शोक और भविष्य की चिंता नहीं करनी चाहिए।
बुद्धिमान मनुष्य वर्तमान में जीते हैं।
