Vat Purnima Quotes in Sanskrit | Meaning, Story & Wishes | ReSanskrit
Vat Purnima, also known as Vat Savitri Vrat, Vata Pournami, or Vata Purnima Vrat, is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated primarily by married women in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, and parts of South India. On this day, women observe a fast and worship the sacred banyan (Vat) tree, tying threads around its trunk while praying for the long life, prosperity, and well-being of their husbands. The festival commemorates the legendary devotion of Savitri, who, through her unwavering determination and wisdom, persuaded Yama, the god of death, to restore the life of her husband Satyavan. The banyan tree, revered for its longevity and ever-growing nature, symbolizes strength, stability, and an enduring married life, making it the focal point of the celebrations.
According to the Mahabharata, Princess Savitri chose Satyavan as her husband despite learning that he was destined to die within a year. On the foretold day, Satyavan collapsed while cutting wood in a forest beneath a banyan tree. When Yama, the god of death, came to claim his soul, Savitri followed him with unwavering devotion, wisdom, and humility. Impressed by her determination and righteous conduct, Yama granted her several boons. With remarkable intelligence, Savitri ultimately secured the restoration of Satyavan's life. This inspiring tale of devotion, courage, and steadfast faith is remembered every year on Vat Purnima, with the banyan tree serving as a symbol of longevity, strength, and an unbreakable marital bond.
