The Antyeṣṭi Saṁskāra is one of the sixteen sacraments of Hinduism, performed after a person's death with prayers for the soul's peace and attainment of salvation. In this ritual, the body is consigned to fire to dissolve into the five elements, marking the completion of the cycle of life. Vedic mantras and prayers are recited to pray for a smooth journey for the soul to the next world. At this time, family members mourn, but also recognise that death is not an end but a new phase for the soul. Thus, the Antyeshti Saṁskāra symbolises the final farewell to human life and the spiritual acceptance of the soul's eternal journey. Tretāgni refers to the three sacred household fires . The final rites, which liberate the soul from the physical body after death, are performed according to the rituals (of these three) followed by the person in their गृहस्थाश्रम (gṛhasthāśrama) that is the Householder Stage .

Mantras recited in this Saṁskāra:-

Transliteration:
sūryaṁ cakṣur gacchatu vātam ātmā dyāṁ ca gaccha pṛthivīṁ ca dharmaṇā| apo vā gaccha yadi tatra te hitam oṣadhīṣu prati tiṣṭhā śarīraiḥ||

Hindi Translation:

English Translation:
After death, the body gets absorbed in its respective causal substances and the soul, according to its own karma, reaches the luminous, watery, earthly worlds and the inert forms of trees etc.

With the chanting of such mantras, the Final/Last Rite is completed.
Thus, the sixteen sacraments of Hinduism serve to sanctify, purify, and enrich every stage of life, from birth to death. These sacraments not only symbolise tradition and culture, but also play a vital role in a person's physical, mental, social, and spiritual development. Through them, humans learn to follow the path of duty, morality, discipline, and righteousness. Ultimately, these sacraments inspire us to make life not only worth living, but also valuable and purposeful.
